We woke up relatively early to catch the 9 AM jetty ride from Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort to Oslob which took about 10 minutes. Once there, the resort’s car service brought us straight to the Whale Shark Watching Centre and our guide quickly arranged everything for us. After a quick briefing about the rules (such as not getting less than 4 meters away from the sharks), we already set off to sea.

The experience was nothing short of riveting. It only lasted for a few minutes (about 20-30), but it felt like forever while we were at it. We encountered at least 4 whale sharks and it was difficult to avoid getting close to them as they themselves tended to swim near onlookers.

My only concern is that the whale sharks are fed from the boats to ensure their presence in the area. Being migration mammals, this may have adverse implications on their natural breeding patterns and movement. On the other hand, we were told that the reason why the centre closes shop at noon is because the whale sharks characteristically leave the area around that time. The encounter surely is thrilling and probably brings in a lot to the local economy, but I hope any bad practice is reduced or better yet halted altogether.

The Aguinid Falls, alongside the whale shark encounter, is part of one of the many tour packages Bluewater Sumilon offers. It’s only about 15 minutes away from the Whale Shark Watching Centre.

Our guide said our timing could’ve been better because the water still wasn’t as abundant as it gets during the rainy season. Nevertheless, the trek was still all in all pleasing as Aguinid is simply a complete stunner. The sights were satisfying and the water fresh and cool that we had a kick in taking dips here and there.

It’s nothing compared to Kawasan Falls, but it definitely is worth a trip if you’re already in Oslob.
