Philippines: Sumilon Blue Water Resort, Cebu

Though one of my resolutions at the beginning of the year was to go on more local adventures in the summer, helping in my dad’s campaign in Manila for 3 months thoroughly crushed those hopes and dreams. So when Access Travel presented the prospect of checking out Sumilon Island, I readily said yes even if summer had already ended. Besides, it was about time I got to swim alongside those breathtaking whale sharks!

Sumilon Island in Cebu is more conveniently reached if you fly to Sibulan Airport (in Dumaguete). From there, we took a ferry to Oslob then the Bluewater Resort’s private jetty to Sumilon. You could also choose to fly to Mactan-Cebu Airport instead, but that entails the hassle of driving for 3 hours to Oslob.

The 24-hectare private island has loads more to offer to sea-loving tourists apart from the sought-after whale shark and Tumalog Falls tour package. The resort has a lagoon with high mangroves perfect for some scenic kayaking or fishing. Trekking through 3 different trails is also an option to check out the island’s close to complete ecosystem. You can also go snorkeling in crystal clear waters to see the marine life of various sizes and colours.

But of course, the highlight of the trip for us lazy bums was the sandbar where we drank a bit, swam a bit, and basically just chillabrated. Although it did get a little crowded with a the groups of day-trippers early in the afternoon, it didn’t really dampen our enjoyment of the place. And it only got better right before sunset, when they had to leave, and we had the sandbar all to ourselves.

Cheers to Access Travel for the painless planning and to Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort for making sure everything went smoothly well!
